How to Find A Therapist That Works For You

So, you’ve decided it’s time to start therapy. Congratulations! That takes a lot of self reflection and intention to understand that and act upon it. But now comes the hard part: finding a therapist that works for you. Finding a therapist can be a lot like dating; you’ll probably have to meet with a few different ones before you find one that’s right. It might take a few months, but if you stick with it, it will pay off. Once you find someone you can trust and open up to, your healing journey will be immensely eye opening. But what should you look for when finding a therapist? Here are four factors we recommend considering when finding the right therapist for you.

1. Try To Pinpoint What You Need Help With

Most therapists have specialties like couples therapy, eating disorders, depression, personality disorders, etc. If you start your search knowing what it is you’re seeking help and guidance on, your search will become a little more narrow as you begin to explore therapists within that field.

2. Figure Out Your Non-Negotiables

As you begin your search, think about what non-negotiables you have when it comes to a therapist. This could be making sure they share your same gender, race, religion, are a similar age to you, or if you’re bilingual, speak the same languages as you. Essentially, your non-negotiables are what will help you feel more at ease with the therapist before your first session even begins.

3. Be Patient

As we mentioned earlier, finding a therapist is a lot like dating. This means you probably won’t find your perfect therapist at your first consultation. But that’s okay! If you’re patient and take the time to meet with different therapists until you find one that seems like a good fit, you’ll get so much more out of therapy. There isn’t much point in going to therapy with someone with whom you feel you can’t be open and self-disclose with.

4. Know What Your Finances and Insurance Deductibles Are

It’s important to start your search by understanding what you’re able to pay or what your insurance is willing to cover. Try starting your search by Googling “therapists that take blank insurance” or “therapists whose hourly rate is blank”. There are also websites dedicated to finding therapists that allow you to filter by insurance and hourly rate. By understanding your finances and insurance at the beginning of your journey to find a therapist, you won’t be caught off guard by hourly rates or someone who doesn’t take your insurance. Filtering your searches like this will help streamline your search to find someone either within your budget or that your insurance covers.

Finding a therapist will inevitably take some time and effort, but don’t worry, your work will pay off. Taking the time to find someone who is right for you can only benefit you in the long run. If you’re having a hard time finding someone yourself, you can also always reach out to your healthcare provider or friends and family for resources.
